What to Bring to DPS for an Optional Learner Permit

The Learner Permit Is Optional for Adults
Adults are not required to get a learner permit before their license — there is no behind-the-wheel hours requirement to satisfy. Many adults go straight for the license. A permit can be useful if you want to practice driving legally before your road test. See Texas learner license for adults.

If you choose to get a learner permit first, schedule a first-time application appointment at txdpsscheduler.com and bring the documents below. Download your Certificate of Completion from your dashboard before you go.

Document Checklist

  1. Certificate of Completion — Print it; do not sign until DPS tells you to.
  2. Proof of identity and lawful presence — e.g., a U.S. passport, passport card, or birth certificate plus supporting documents.
  3. Social Security number — DPS verifies electronically; no card is required, but bring it as a backup.
  4. Two proofs of Texas residency — From two different sources (for example, a utility bill, lease, or bank statement showing your Texas address).
  5. Payment for the DPS fee — Paid directly to DPS. See additional fees.

Common Questions

Does my Certificate of Completion expire?

The ADE-1317 itself has no state-set expiration date, but you should use it at DPS within two years. See certificate validity.

Do I have to get a permit before my license?

No. The permit is optional for adults. You can apply directly for your driver license. See What to bring to DPS for your driving test for the license/road-test checklist.

What if DPS has questions about my certificate?

It is issued by a TDLR-licensed adult driver education provider. If an office has questions, ask to speak with a supervisor. For more detail, see Certificate acceptance at Texas DPS.
