Who Needs the Texas Adult Driver Education Course?
Ages 18–24, first Texas license: required
If you are 18 through 24 and applying for your first Texas driver license, Texas requires you to complete an approved driver education course before DPS will issue it (Transp. Code §521.1601) — the Happy Drivers Ed six-hour adult course is a qualifying course.
25 and older: optional, but many still take it
Driver education is not required at 25 and older. Take the course voluntarily, pass the in-course written exam, and Texas DPS accepts your ADE-1317 in lieu of the written (knowledge) test the same way — plan to use the certificate within about two years, and the vision and road tests are still taken at DPS. Moving from another U.S. state: exempt from the course
A valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state exempts you from the under-25 driver-education course requirement (Transp. Code §521.1601(b)).
Under 18: different program
The adult course is for adults 18 and older only. Drivers under 18 take the Texas teen driver education program (parent-taught or instructor-led), which we do not offer.

Complete ITAD
Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) is a free, roughly one-hour distracted-driving video from the Texas DPS, required before the driving skills (road) test for every adult taking it — including applicants 25 and older. Its certificate is valid for 90 days from the date on it, so watch it close to your road-test appointment.

DPS accepts the printed certificate in lieu of the written (knowledge) test — for applications dated less than two years after the certificate. The certificate itself does not expire; only that acceptance window does, and the certificate still proves you completed driver education.

The vision test happens at DPS. The road (driving) test is taken at DPS or a DPS-approved third-party testing school — the course does not cover those two tests at any age.
