What is in the 6-hour Texas adult drivers ed course?
The Happy Drivers Ed 6-hour adult driver education course is one TDLR-approved online course made up of eight self-paced lessons, followed by a comprehensive final written exam. The lessons cover Texas traffic laws, road signs, right of way, controlling traffic flow, alcohol and drug awareness, sharing the road, and managing risk. Finish the lessons and pass the exam, and you earn a single ADE-1317 Certificate of Completion.
This is the adults-exclusive course for first-time license applicants — there are no behind-the-wheel hours, no driving log, and no parent instructor. It is online, classroom-phase only. To see how the course fits the full path to a license, read how it works.

Lessons 1–8
Eight self-paced lessons covering Texas traffic laws, road signs, right of way, alcohol and drug awareness, and managing risk.
Comprehensive Final Exam
The final exam covers Texas road signs and traffic laws. When you pass, your ADE-1317 Certificate of Completion shows course and written-exam completion, so you do not retake that written test at DPS. The vision and road tests are still taken at DPS.
Final Steps to Get Your License
Earn your ADE-1317 Certificate of Completion, then follow the final steps — complete ITAD and take your DPS tests — to get your Texas license.
How long does the course take?
The course is 6 hours total. Before you can take the final exam, you must spend at least 5 hours and 30 minutes (330 minutes) reviewing the lesson content. This minimum course time is set by Texas law and is out of our control.
Your course access lasts 6 months (180 days) from purchase, so you do not have to finish in one sitting — but the course is only 6 hours, so most students are done in no time.
