Who the course is for, what it includes, and the steps to your license.
To begin this course you must be at least 18 years old. If you are 18 through 24 years old and applying for your first Texas driver license, Texas requires you to complete an approved driver education course, and this six-hour adult course is a qualifying course. If you are 25 or older, driver education is not required, but you can still take the course voluntarily.
A valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state exempts you from the under-25 course requirement when you surrender that license (U.S. states only — a license from another country does not qualify; DPS handles foreign-license cases individually). Not sure which band you fall in? Check your eligibility.
Yes. The course teaches the Texas highway signs and traffic laws on the DPS written test and includes the in-course written exam. When you pass, your ADE-1317 Certificate of Completion shows course and written-exam completion, so you do not retake that written test at DPS.
The vision and road (driving) tests are still taken at DPS at any age — those are not covered by the course. See how this works on our Texas DPS written test guide.
No. If you are 25 or older, driver education isn't required to get your first Texas license (DPS: "No driver education requirements for ages 25 and older"); you can still take the course voluntarily.
If you do take the 6-hour course voluntarily, pass the in-course written exam, and bring your ADE-1317 to DPS, you normally do not retake the written test at the office. Use the certificate within two years. The vision and road tests are still taken at DPS.
Many adults still take it to learn current Texas road rules. Note that ITAD is required for everyone taking the DPS driving skills test, including applicants 25 and older.

Getting Your License
Permits, the ITAD program, and your driving test at the DPS.
A learner permit is optional for adults 18 and older; there is no required waiting period (the six-month hold applies only to under-18). It is only needed if you want to legally practice on public roads first. While practicing, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21, holds a license valid for that vehicle, has at least one year of driving experience, and is seated next to you.
When you go to your DPS appointment for your permit or license, bring your Certificate of Completion (the ADE-1317 form), the DL-14A application (the Texas adult driver license application — adults sign for themselves), proof of Texas residency, proof of identity and lawful presence, your Social Security card, the applicable DPS fee, and proof of car insurance if you own a vehicle.
No — ITAD is separate from your course Certificate of Completion. Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) is a free, roughly one-hour distracted-driving video from the Texas DPS — it is not part of Happy Drivers Ed. ITAD is required before the DPS driving skills (road) test for adults 18-24 who take driver education and for applicants 25 and older.
Complete ITAD after you finish your 6-hour course and before your road test, then bring the printed certificate to your appointment. The ITAD certificate is valid for 90 days — if you do not pass the skills test within 90 days, you must retake ITAD. ITAD must be watched on a desktop or laptop computer (not a cell phone, tablet, or iPad).
Register at impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov/ITAD, select "TDLR Number," and enter "C3476" (our provider number). See our full ITAD guide for step-by-step help.

The DPS driving (road) test is taken at DPS and is not covered by the course. The course covers the written-test material and includes the in-course written exam. DPS form DL-60 lists the graded maneuvers, which currently include backing in a straight line, parallel parking, approaching intersections, turning, stopping in regular traffic, controlling the vehicle, observing traffic, maintaining vehicle position, and using signals.
Schedule your test on the DPS website; DPS-authorized third-party testing may also be available if your local DPS has no availability. If you do not pass, follow DPS retake instructions and bring a current ITAD certificate (valid 90 days). See our Texas road test guide for what to expect.
