How Do I Get My Certificate of Completion?

When you finish the course, Happy Drivers Ed issues a single Certificate of Completion (the Texas adult driver education certificate, form ADE-1317). There is just one certificate — no separate learner or provisional certificates. You present it to the Texas DPS when you apply for your driver license.

How to Earn It

To receive your Certificate of Completion, you must:

  • Complete all of the course's six hours of instruction (eight lessons)
  • Meet the required instructional time (the course tracks your active learning time)
  • Pass the comprehensive final exam with a score of at least 70% — see passing scores

How to Download Your Certificate

Once you have met all the requirements:

  • Your certificate becomes available in your course dashboard
  • Click the certificate to download the PDF
  • Print it to bring to your DPS visit

What Else Do You Need at DPS?

Along with your Certificate of Completion, first-time applicants present standard documents and complete the DPS tests. Everyone taking the DPS driving skills test also completes the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) course before the road test, including applicants 25 and older. See What to bring to DPS for your driving test for the full checklist. Your Certificate of Completion documents that you finished a TDLR-approved driver education course and passed the in-course written exam, so you do not retake the road-signs-and-traffic-laws written test at DPS. You still complete the DPS vision test and road test; those are not covered by the certificate.

Keep the Three Clocks Separate
Your ADE-1317 is your completion record, plan to use it at DPS within two years, and the separate ITAD certificate is valid for 90 days. You can download your course certificate again from your dashboard at any time at no cost. See certificate validity.
