To complete the course, you need to meet the instructional time requirement and pass the comprehensive final exam at the end. Throughout the course you will also answer short knowledge checks and identity (personal validation) questions, but the final exam is the graded assessment that determines whether you pass.
The Final Exam
- At least 30 questions covering Texas highway signs and traffic laws
- 70% to pass — you must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly (miss no more than 30%)
- Taken at the end of the course as a comprehensive final
Retakes
If you do not pass, you can retake the final exam with a different set of questions. You are not required to repeat the whole course before retaking, though you may review the material first. You have up to three attempts to pass.
For full details on what happens if you do not pass within three attempts, see What if I fail the final exam?.
Question Format
Questions are primarily multiple-choice. They cover Texas traffic laws, road signs and markings, right-of-way rules, speed limits, and safe-driving practices — all based on the course material. Focus on understanding the rules rather than memorizing answers; it will help you pass the course exam and prepares you for safe driving on the road test at DPS.
