How do you take Impact Texas Adult Drivers?
Take Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) directly on the official Texas DPS Impact Texas Drivers website. It is a free, roughly one-hour distracted-driving video from the Texas DPS — a separate DPS step, not part of the Happy Drivers Ed course. Complete ITAD after you finish your 6-hour adult course and before your road test, then bring the printed certificate to your appointment.
- Finish your 6-hour adult driver education course and earn your Certificate of Completion first.
- Open the DPS Impact Texas Drivers site on a desktop or laptop computer.
- Create an account, then watch the full video (you can pause, but not skip ahead).
- Print and save the completion certificate for your DPS road-test appointment.
When should you take ITAD?
Complete ITAD after you finish your 6-hour adult course and before your DPS driving skills (road) test. The ITAD certificate is valid for 90 days. You must pass your DPS driving skills test within 90 days of the date on the certificate, or you'll need to restart ITAD. Plan to take it close to your road-test appointment so the certificate is still current when you go.
Who has to take ITAD?
ITAD is required before the DPS driving skills (road) test for adults 18–24 who take driver education AND for applicants 25 and older. Heads up: while the 6-hour driver education course is only required for first-time applicants under 25, ITAD itself is required for everyone taking the DPS driving skills test, including applicants 25 and older.
| Applicant | 6-hour course | ITAD before road test |
|---|---|---|
| 18–24, first-time Texas applicant | Required | Required |
| 25 and older | Not required (optional) | Required |
What device do you need for ITAD?
ITAD (adults) is a different program from Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD). As an adult applicant, you take ITAD — not the teen course.
What comes after ITAD?
ITAD is step 2 of the process. After you finish it, the next steps are an optional learner's permit (only if you want to practice on public roads first) and then your driving test and Texas license at DPS.
