How to Complete the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) Course

The Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) course is a free, short video course run by the Texas DPS — completely separate from Happy Drivers Ed. It is the adult version of the Impact Texas Drivers program. We do not administer ITAD and cannot troubleshoot issues on the DPS site.

Who Needs ITAD?

Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) is required before the DPS driving skills (road) test for adults 18–24 who take driver education and for applicants 25 and older. Only the 6-hour driver education course becomes optional at 25+; ITAD is still required if you are taking the DPS road test. When you complete ITAD, bring the printed certificate to your appointment.

When to Take It

Take ITAD after you finish our adult driver education course and before your DPS road test. The ITAD certificate is valid for 90 days. You must pass your DPS driving skills test within 90 days of the date on the certificate, or you need to restart ITAD.

ITAD and Your Course Certificate Are Different
Your Certificate of Completion from Happy Drivers Ed is separate from the DPS ITAD certificate. The ITAD certificate has the 90-day clock; you do not retake our course just because you need to restart ITAD.

How to Register

ITAD is best taken on a desktop or laptop — phones and tablets may not be supported.

  1. Go to impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov
  2. Create an account or log in and select the adult (ITAD) course
  3. Use your exact legal name as it appears on your ID and your Certificate of Completion — a mismatch can cause problems at the driving test
  4. Watch the full video course (it cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded)
  5. Print or save the certificate that is provided when you finish

At the Driving Test

Bring your printed ITAD certificate along with your Certificate of Completion and your identity, residency, and Social Security documents. See What to bring to DPS for your driving test for the full checklist.

Common Issues

  • Certificate expired: Retake ITAD for free at impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov.
  • Lost certificate: Log back into the Impact Texas Drivers website to reprint it.
  • Technical issues: We cannot help with the DPS Impact Texas Drivers site — DPS runs it entirely. Contact DPS at [email protected].
