Identity Verification Questions in the Course

While you work through the lessons, the course will occasionally stop and ask you to confirm a personal detail — something like your last name, your date of birth, or the email on your account. These are identity verification questions. They are a normal part of Texas-approved online adult driver education, not a glitch, and this article explains why they exist, how they work, and what to do if you miss one.

Why the Course Asks

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) rule for online adult courses, 16 TAC §84.503(c), requires the course to keep confirming that the enrolled student is the person actually taking it. The rule calls these personal validation questions: at least two must appear at random during each instructional hour (never in the final exam), each must be answered within 90 seconds, and a student who answers more than 30 percent of them incorrectly must be excluded from the course. TDLR sets the rule; Happy Drivers Ed administers the questions inside the course. The Texas DPS is not involved in this step.

How the Questions Work

  • They are about you. Every question uses the details on your own account — your name, your date of birth, or your account email. Some are multiple choice, and the other options are made-up values, never another student's information. Others are true/false statements about your details, and some of those show a name that is not yours on purpose — read the statement and answer whether it is correct.
  • They appear at unannounced points. The course includes twelve short checkpoints across the eight lessons — some lessons have more than one. You will not know in advance when one is coming.
  • One attempt, 90 seconds. Each checkpoint is a single question with a 90-second timer. Once you answer — or the timer runs out — the result is recorded and that checkpoint will not be shown again.
  • The lesson waits for your answer, then continues. The lesson's Continue button stays locked until you respond to the question above it. A wrong answer is recorded as a miss, but you can keep going with the lesson.
  • They do not count toward any score. Verification questions are separate from the lesson knowledge checks and the final exam.

What a Missed Question Means

A wrong answer or a timed-out question counts as one miss. Misses add up across the whole course, not per lesson. After four missed verification questions, the account is locked — that is the course applying the state's “more than 30 percent” rule. Below that threshold, a miss does not stop you from continuing.

The usual cause of a miss
In practice, missed questions almost always come from one of two things: a typo in the information on file (a misspelled name or a wrong birth date entered at sign-up), or someone other than the enrolled student sitting at the keyboard. Answer with exactly the details you entered when you signed up, and if you spot a mistake in those details, fix it before you continue — see correcting an error in your information. Some checkpoints are true/false statements — if the statement shows details that are not yours, the correct answer is False. Your name and date of birth also print on your Certificate of Completion.

If Your Account Is Locked

A locked account cannot open the lessons, but your progress is saved — completed lessons, course time, and exam results are all kept. Use the unlock request on the lock screen, or email [email protected] from the email address on your account, and we will take it from there.

Tips to Avoid Misses

  1. Check that your name and date of birth are spelled and entered correctly before you start the lessons.
  2. Stay at the keyboard while a lesson is open — the 90-second timer starts when the question appears.
  3. Use your own login only; the questions are personal to the enrolled student.
  4. On true/false checkpoints, answer False if the statement shows details that are not yours. If a question will not accept details you know are correct, stop and email support before continuing to the next checkpoints.
