No. Applicants 25 and older are not required to take a driver education course. You may take the 6-hour course voluntarily to prepare, pass the in-course written exam, and avoid retaking the written test at DPS. ITAD is still required before the DPS driving skills test.

I have a license from another state. Do I still need the course?

Accepted Answer

Applicants who hold a valid driver license from another U.S. state and surrender it are exempt from the course requirement. This exemption applies to U.S.-state licenses only. Confirm your transfer requirements with DPS.

Question 4

Which DPS tests does the course cover?

Accepted Answer

The course covers the written knowledge material and includes the in-course written exam. When you pass, your Certificate of Completion shows course and written-exam completion, so you do not retake that written test at DPS. You still take the DPS vision test and the road test; the course does not cover those.
