[Optional] Learner’s Permit FAQs

Obtaining a Learner’s Permit is not a requirement to get your license. Whether or not you choose to get one depends on your personal situation. In Texas you are not required to do any behind-the-wheel hours before applying for your license, however if you want to practice on Texas roads before your driving exam you’ll need to get a Learner’s permit. Another benefit of a Learner’s Permit is that you can take the Driving Exam at a driving school instead of the DPS if you want. This may be a good option if your local DPS doesn’t have Driving Test availability. You will not be able to drive alone with a Learner’s Permit, a licensed driver age 21 or older must be in the passenger seat. Here are the steps to getting your permit:

1. Schedule an Appointment at Your Local DPS

2. Bring These Required Documents:

  • Happy Drivers Ed Certificate of Completion (ADE 1317)
  • Form DL-14A (Application for an Original Texas Driver License)
  • Proof of Texas Residency
  • Proof of Identity and Lawful Presence
  • Social Security Card (Originals only, no copies allowed)
  • Learner License Fee (Cash/Check/Card)
  • If you own a vehicle, bring:
    • Proof of Car Insurance
