Obtaining a Learner’s Permit is not a requirement to get your license. Whether or not you choose to get one depends on your personal situation. In Texas you are not required to do any behind-the-wheel hours before applying for your license, however if you want to practice on Texas roads before your driving exam you’ll need to get a Learner’s permit. Another benefit of a Learner’s Permit is that you can take the Driving Exam at a driving school instead of the DPS if you want. This may be a good option if your local DPS doesn’t have Driving Test availability. You will not be able to drive alone with a Learner’s Permit, a licensed driver age 21 or older must be in the passenger seat. Here are the steps to getting your permit:
1. Schedule an Appointment at Your Local DPS
